  Justinians Honor Philadelphia Bar Chancellor
02-11-2004

Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Gabriel L.I. Bevilacqua was honored by the Justinian Society at a luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at noon at The Union League of Philadelphia, 140 South Broad Street in Center City Philadelphia. In addition to being the 77th Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, Gabe Bevilacqua is a partner at the law firm of Saul Ewing LLP, where he is a member of the litigation department. Bevilacqua is a former Chancellor of the Justinian Society.

The Justinian Society of Philadelphia, founded in 1935 by 47 attorneys of Italian ancestry, is an educational, non-profit organization of Italian-American lawyers. They are engaged in activities directed toward fostering a spirit of good fellowship, maintaining honor and dignity of the legal profession, performing civic duties, administering justice, and promoting the study of law.

Bevilacqua arrived in Philadelphia from Italy with his family at age seven. In less than ten years, he went from not speaking a word of English to being ranked among the top high school orators in America. He became a U.S. citizen, worked his way through St. Joseph’s University and Temple University Beasley School of Law and landed a job in the Philadelphia City Solicitor’s Office where he remained for ten years. He joined Saul Ewing in 1984 and became a partner in 1986.

In addition to his activities with the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Justinian Society, Bevilacqua is a founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce, has served on the boards of several area hospitals and providers, has chaired the Social Justice Commission of the order Sons of Italy in America, is a member of the council of 1000 of the National Italian American Foundation, and has been honored for his work by the OSIA, the City of Altoona, the Philadelphia City Council and the Pennsylvania Senate and House of Representatives.
