The Justinian Society of Philadelphia
Invites you to a Luncheon to honor the recipient of
The Justinian Society Outstanding Service Award
The Honorable Carl A. Solano
Governor Tom Wolf nominated and the Senate of Pennsylvania unanimously confirmed Carl Solano to serve as a judge on the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, where he served until December 31, 2017, when his term expired.
Judge Solano was the Chair of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis' Appellate Practice Group, where he spent more than 30 years practicing appellate law. He successfully handled high-profile appeals in the courts of the Commonwealth and throughout the United States, addressing such varied issues as the inherent authority of the judiciary to compel its own funding, punitive damage recoveries under the Due Process Clause, and the ability of the Legislature to authorize suspensions of statutory requirements. He also litigated leading cases on the rights of the intellectually disabled and the standards for appointing counsel for indigent litigants. After earning his law degree at Villanova University School of Law, with Order of the Coif honors, and a clerkship for the Honorable Alfred L. Luongo, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Mr. Solano joined Schnader, where he practiced for 38 years before being appointed to the Court. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and an elected member of the American Law Institute. He has served on the Board of Governors of The Justinian Society of Philadelphia and as Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Appellate Courts Committee and the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Appellate Advocacy Committee. He was named by The Best Lawyers in America as its 2016 “Philadelphia Lawyer of the Year” for Appellate Law.
