Justinian and OSIA National Past President Appointed Chairman of PA Redistricting Committee 07-06-2001
Frank J. Montemuro, Jr., a former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice, Justinian Society Member and national past president of the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the largest and longest established organization representing Americans of Italian descent, was selected to head the commission charged with redrawing Pennsylvania state legislative districts, June 7, 2001.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court named Montemuro chairman of the commission that will configure 203 new House and 50 new Senate districts to account for population changes in the 2000 census. The Pennsylvania state constitution gives power to the head of the redistricting commission to decide the final legislative district map in the event of tying votes.
"Frank Montemuro is an honorable and fair-minded man who has the best interests of Pennsylvania in mind," state House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese said.
Montemuro, 75, is currently a senior judge assigned to the Pennsylvania Superior Court. He has been a jurist on both trial and appellate courts for the last 36 years. His career as a jurist includes serving as a Superior Court Judge for twelve years and as Justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania for three years.
Montemuro founded the OSIA Commission for Social Justice (CSJ), the anti-defamation arm of OSIA, which works to replace false and discriminatory portrayals of Italian Americans with positive images. He has served as both president and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the CSJ, and currently serves as president emeritus.
He is a member of the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations, the Justinian Society Anti-Defamation Committee, the Judicial Inquiry & Review Board and the Lawyers Club of Philadelphia. Montemuro is a member of numerous civic organizations including, the Police Athletic League, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, March of Dimes, and Bustleton Lions Club.
