Justinians Participate in Philadelphia "LAW WEEK 2000" Which Features Free Legal Advice 04-28-2000
Volunteer Philadelphia lawyers will offer free legal advice over the telephone to area residents Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in celebration of "Law Week 2000," the annual lawfest sponsored by the 14,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association. Residents can access this service by calling 215-238-6333 to have their legal questions answered free and confidentially.
The lawyers will staff a phone bank at the headquarters of the Philadelphia Bar Association in the Aramark Tower, 1101 Market St., 11th floor. More than 50 attorneys participating in the effort are expected to answer in excess of 7,000 inquiries. Each day, attorneys from a different ethnic or minority legal organization will staff the telephones. Participating groups include The Barristers' Association of Philadelphia, Inc. (Monday); The Justinian Society (Tuesday); the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania (Wednesday); the Public Interest Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association (Thursday); and the Gay and Lesbian Law Week 2000 is one of the most ambitious public outreach efforts of its type in the nation. Law Week 2000's theme, "Celebrate Your Freedom," is an opportunity for us to reflect on how the law protects our freedom to express our opinions, select our leaders, worship where we choose, and pursue our livelihood. This year's Law Week emphasis is on "speaking up for democracy and diversity."
All of the Law Week activities are under the direction of Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor-Elect Carl S. Primavera and are coordinated by the Association's Young Lawyers Division (YLD) with the help of scores of lawyer-volunteers. The YLD Law Week co-chairs are YLD Chair-Elect James E. Elam and Executive Committee member Luci J. McClure. |
